Description: This 89-minute cantata from 1870 dates from Herzogenberg’s early, more “radical” days when he was influenced by Wagner and the New German School. The action begins with sailors getting mutinous and ratchets up the tension until, at the last minute for Columbus, threatened with being tossed overboard, land is sighted. There are two choruses, one of sailors and one, innovatively, which comments on the action like a Greek chorus. The notes print much of a contemporary review which lauds Herzogenberg’s potential as a “progressive” composer. But, of course, Brahms won out in the end. 2 CDs. German-English texts. Michael Schade (tenor), André Schuen, Markus Butter (baritones), Graz Opera Choruses, Graz Philharmonic; Dirk Kaftan.
