Description: Concerto-Poem for Piano and Orchestra (Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Emil Tabakov), Piano Quintet (New Art Chamber Soloists), Cello Sonata (Arkadiusz Dobrowolski [cello]), for Solo Piano: 4 Preludes, La Musique Oubliée: 3 Musical Pictures, 3 Pieces. The only work with orchestra here, the 1946 Concerto-Poem, seems to be a dark, late Romantic piece influenced by Rachmaninov, but there are places where Szymanowski seems to suddenly appear briefly as well as short periods of expressive atonality. This amalgam occasionally admits Shostakovich into some of the chamber and piano pieces except for the completely dodecaphonic Preludes of 1935, whose dark anxiety mellows slightly into a tranquil melancholy in the tonal Musical Pictures of 1948-49 (after 1938, all his music reverted to conventional tonality). Such was the manner in which a Polish composer who spent his life in Lwów dealt with the varying musical languages of an era of two world wars and post-Second World War repression by Communist cultural authorities. Michał Drewnowski (piano).
