Description: Rueda writes highly virtuosic music based on forms and genres of the past 175 years but which is never in any doubt of being modern. Mephisto may be inspired by Liszt's famous waltz but the techniques (both of composition and those demanded of the performer) are quite up to date, complex but not technically atonal. His first sonata (1991) was inspired by Ravel and his second by jazz and Balinese Kecak dance rhythms and the biggest work here, the long series of Interludes are a 21st century version of the Characterstücke and/or Humoreske. Expressive, colorful and demanding, these pieces mark the arrival on disc of an important Spanish composer. Ananda Sukarlan (piano).
