Description: These tautly structured and economical chamber works display the influence of the Second Viennese School, both in the composer's use of serial technique (which is present to a greater or lesser extent) and in the clear and uncluttered way in which timbre and tone-color, as well as changing density of texture, are used as thematic elements. Typically the works are made up of contrasting segments with a precise sense of balance; the basic material is expanded and contracted as successive segments are juxtaposed, thus forming a kind of evolving musical argument. Instrumental virtuosity, though present, is subtle and undemonstrative; interpretive freedom, in the form of some passages in flexible notation, is a feature of the more recent works.
